Biography
I was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944, and in 1961 I left for Miami, Florida. Back then, I worked as a print model and actor, and somehow found myself on TV shows like The Jackie Gleason Show on CBS and The Midnight Caller on NBC. Those were wild times.
In 1966, I served in the U.S. Army for two years. After that, in 1969, I moved out to California, where I started chasing what turned into my life’s calling, sports broadcasting. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a sports anchor and play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports, Telemundo, the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and even the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
I became the first Spanish-language major league play-by-play announcer to work for four different teams, and at one point, I was even calling home games for two teams at the same time, in two different leagues, the San Francisco Giants and the Seattle Mariners. Then I did it again commuting between Anaheim (Angels) and Oakland (Athletics). That’s something no one else has done. Along the way, I’ve also covered the Caribbean World Series, World Cup Soccer, and the Super Bowl.
I’ve been lucky enough to be recognized for my work. I was included in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World in 2003, 2004, and 2005. I’ve also been inducted into the Cuban Sports Hall of Fame, the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame, and the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. On top of broadcasting, I’ve kept busy writing articles and columns in both English and Spanish, which you can find online and in bilingual newspapers across the U.S. and Latin America.
